Zero-gadget coffee

Here's an excellent article on making "cowboy coffee" in a saucepan. Who needs the cost and counter-clutter of coffee gadgets? I grind my coffee beans in the store where I buy them, store the ground coffee cold and air-tight, and brew it on my stove top.

I like an espresso-strength coffe for my soy latte, so I actually do this:

  1. Bring one pint of water to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. Turn heat to low, so the water is just simmering.
  3. Add 3/4 cup of ground coffee and stir with a chopstick.
  4. Return to simmer.
  5. Immediately remove from heat and cover.
  6. Wait till the grounds sink (approximately 5 minutes).
  7. Pour through a fine-mesh stainless-steel strainer into a pint jar. (I store this coffee in the refrigerator for 4 or 5 days, using just a shot or two to make my morning latte.)
